Donald Trump appears to be trying to goad North Korea into doing something that will give him a pretext to go to war. Whether this is his intent or a consequence of the reckless words and acts to which he is prone is almost beside the point.
The conventional wisdom is that he is bound and determined to do Israel's bidding and withdraw from the JCPOA, with which Iran is in compliance. Among other bad outcomes this reinforces the message to North Korea that the US cannot be counted on as a reliable partner in any agreement to which it is a party.
Our fate is in the hands of a man unmoored from reality, disengaged from truth, indifferent to fact. We are reduced to hope that Tillerson and the generals will fend off disaster.
